Gas cost calculator
Choose an action or enter a gas limit, pick a gas price (the tracker fills in low, standard and fast) and see the cost in ETH and dollars at the live price.
Cost = gas used x gas price x 10^-9 ETH. Live gwei from our tracker (sampled every 20 minutes); wallets add a safety margin to the gas limit.
The formula
Cost in ETH = gas used x gas price in gwei x 10^-9. A simple transfer uses 21,000 gas; a token swap around 150,000; complex DeFi transactions can exceed 500,000. The dollar figure multiplies by the current ETH price.
Base fee and tip
Since EIP-1559 the gas price is a base fee set by the network plus a priority fee you choose. The base fee is burned; the tip goes to the validator. Our tracker's low, standard and fast figures include a typical tip at each percentile.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my wallet quote a different cost?
Wallets estimate the gas limit with a safety margin and add their own tip; the actual charge uses gas really consumed. The base fee can also change every block (12 seconds).
When is gas cheapest?
Usually weekends and the hours when the US and Europe are asleep, roughly 02:00 to 08:00 UTC. The gas tracker's 24-hour chart shows today's pattern.
Do Layer 2 networks use the same formula?
Mostly, with much lower gas prices, plus a fee for posting data to Ethereum. The gas tracker lists live L2 gas prices.
