All-Time High (ATH)

An all-time high is the highest price an asset has ever reached, a common reference point for measuring drawdowns and recoveries.

The all-time high, or ATH, is the peak price an asset has recorded since it began trading. Crypto participants track it closely because breaking a previous ATH often attracts media coverage and new buyers, while the distance below the ATH is a quick measure of how deep a downturn has been.

Drawdown from the ATH is calculated as the percentage drop from the peak. If a coin peaked at 100 dollars and now trades at 25 dollars, it is 75 percent below its all-time high. Recovering from a 75 percent drop requires a 300 percent gain, not a 75 percent gain, which is why deep drawdowns take a long time to repair.

ATH figures can differ between data providers depending on which exchanges they track and whether they use daily closes or intraday spikes. Bitcoin set new all-time highs in 2013, 2017, 2021, and again from 2024 onward after the launch of US spot ETFs.
