Memecoin

A memecoin is a cryptocurrency built around a joke or internet meme, with value driven by community attention rather than utility.

A memecoin is a token or coin whose main appeal is cultural rather than technical. Dogecoin, created in 2013 as a joke based on the Shiba Inu dog meme, was the first. Later waves included Shiba Inu, Pepe, and thousands of tokens launched on Solana and other chains, many of which lasted only days.

Memecoins typically have no product, no revenue, and no planned use beyond trading. Their prices depend on social media attention, celebrity mentions, and the willingness of new buyers to come in. That makes them among the most volatile assets in crypto. A memecoin can rise thousands of percent in a week and then lose almost all of its value just as fast.

Memecoins are also a frequent vehicle for scams, including rug pulls where creators drain the liquidity and disappear. Tools that let anyone launch a token in minutes have made this easier. Anyone trading memecoins should assume the possibility of losing the entire amount.
