Backtest buys at the first daily close of each month from Coinucation's own price history. No fees. Past performance does not predict future results.
What dollar-cost averaging is
Dollar-cost averaging (DCA) means investing the same dollar amount on a fixed schedule regardless of price. You buy more units when the price is low and fewer when it is high, which produces an average cost that is lower than the average price over the period.
DCA versus lump sum
Historically, lump-sum investing has beaten DCA more often than not in rising markets, because money is exposed to the market for longer. DCA wins when prices fall after the start date and reduces the chance of buying everything at a top. The calculator shows both so you can compare for the period you chose.
Reading the result
"Average cost" is total dollars invested divided by units held. If today's price is above it, the strategy is in profit. The purchase table shows how the position built up month by month.
Frequently asked questions
How is the backtest priced?
Each buy uses the first daily close of the month from Coinucation's price history (Coinbase candles back to listing, CoinGecko for the latest year). Today's value uses the current price from our 15-minute sampler.
Does it include fees?
No. Recurring-buy fees on exchanges range from zero to about 1.5%; subtract that from the return for a realistic figure.
Is DCA a good strategy?
It is a way to manage timing risk, not a guarantee of profit. It suits people investing from income over time. This page is educational and not financial advice.
Why is my coin missing from the list?
Only coins with at least two months of stored history appear. History for the top 300 coins is backfilled on a schedule, so the list grows.
