What dominance measures
Bitcoin dominance is Bitcoin's market cap divided by the market cap of every tracked crypto asset, stablecoins included. It rises when money moves into Bitcoin faster than into everything else, or when altcoins fall faster, and falls during altcoin rotations and when new tokens launch. Coinucation samples it hourly from CoinGecko's global totals and keeps the series in its own table.
How to use it
Rising dominance in a rising market usually marks the early phase of a cycle; falling dominance late in a rally has often preceded the broad altcoin top. Because stablecoins count in the denominator, dominance also drifts lower as stablecoin supply grows, which has nothing to do with Bitcoin demand. Pair it with the altcoin season index, which measures the same rotation by breadth rather than by cap.
Frequently asked questions
What is Bitcoin dominance right now?
59.09% as of Oct 12, 2026, 18:23 UTC, with Ethereum at 10.94%.
Does dominance include stablecoins?
Yes. The denominator is the total market cap of every tracked asset, so growth in USDT and USDC supply lowers dominance even when Bitcoin is flat.
What was the all-time high of Bitcoin dominance?
Close to 100% in Bitcoin's first years, above 90% until 2017, and around 70% at the 2021 cycle start. Coinucation's own samples begin in 2026; the chart shows the highs and lows within them.
