What goes into the index
The index is published by alternative.me and combines volatility (25%), market momentum and volume (25%), social media activity (15%), Bitcoin dominance (10%), Google Trends (10%) and, historically, surveys (15%). Zero is extreme fear, one hundred is extreme greed. Coinucation samples the published value every 20 minutes and keeps its own daily history so the chart and the averages above come from our table.
How to read it
Extreme fear has tended to coincide with local bottoms and extreme greed with local tops, but the index is a coincident gauge of mood, not a timing tool: it can sit above 80 for weeks in a strong trend. The most useful comparison is today against the 30-day average and the recent extremes, which is what the facts block above gives you.
